6 Minute Walk Test

6-Minute Walk Test

What is the 6-Minute Walk Test?
The 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) is a simple and effective way to measure your functional exercise capacity and how well your heart and lungs are working during physical activity. It involves walking at your normal pace for six minutes while we monitor your heart rate, oxygen levels, and breathing.

What does the test involve?
During the test, you’ll be asked to walk back and forth along a 30-meter track for six minutes. The goal is to walk as far as you can within that time, while we monitor:

  • Your distance walked

  • Heart rate

  • Oxygen levels

  • Breathing patterns

It’s normal to feel a little out of breath, but if you feel unwell at any point, we’ll stop the test. You can take short breaks if necessary. After the test, we’ll provide a full report to your doctor for further evaluation.

What can the 6-Minute Walk Test help with?
This test is useful for assessing:

  • Lung conditions like COPD, asthma, or pulmonary fibrosis

  • Heart conditions, including heart failure or pulmonary hypertension

  • Overall fitness levels, especially if you have chronic health conditions that affect physical function

The 6MWT helps your healthcare provider understand how your body is responding to activity, so we can adjust treatment plans or guide you through rehabilitation.

How to Prepare for Your Test
✅ Wear comfortable clothing and suitable walking shoes
✅ Avoid heavy meals just before the test
✅ If you use oxygen or inhalers, bring them with you and let our staff know when booking the test
✅ Let us know if you have any heart conditions or concerns that might affect your ability to walk for six minutes

Improve Your Mobility and Health
If you’re experiencing breathlessness, fatigue, or other symptoms affecting your ability to walk or stay active, the 6-Minute Walk Test can help measure your current health status and guide your next steps.

Ask your GP for a referral or contact us directly to book your 6-minute walk test today.
