FeNO - Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide

$0.00

FeNO Testing (Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide) Bulk Billed

At ERSA, we use FeNO testing to help assess and manage airway inflammation, especially in conditions like asthma. This simple, non-invasive test measures the level of nitric oxide in your breath — a natural gas produced by your airways when they are inflamed.

How FeNO Helps

FeNO testing is particularly useful for detecting eosinophilic airway inflammation, which is a common feature of asthma. Unlike traditional lung function tests (which measure how much air you can blow out), FeNO tells us more about the underlying inflammation in your airways.

This makes FeNO a valuable complement to spirometry, especially if:

  • Your symptoms don’t match your lung function results.

  • You’re starting or adjusting an inhaled corticosteroid.

  • You want to track how well your medication is controlling inflammation over time.

The Test Process

FeNO testing is quick and comfortable — you simply breathe out slowly into a mouthpiece. The device measures the level of nitric oxide in your breath and provides an immediate result. The entire test takes around 5 minutes.

Preparing for Your FeNO Test

To get the most accurate results, please follow these steps before your test:
✅ Avoid eating, drinking, or exercising for at least 1 hour before the test.
✅ Avoid smoking or vaping for at least 1 hour prior to testing.
✅ Avoid foods rich in nitrates and nitrites (such as processed meats, leafy greens, beetroot, and some energy drinks) on the day of the test, as these can artificially raise nitric oxide levels.

Why FeNO Matters

FeNO testing gives us a clearer picture of your airway health, helping us:

  • Confirm or rule out asthma, especially if symptoms are confusing.

  • Adjust your medications based on your level of airway inflammation.

  • Track your progress over time, making sure your treatment is working.

When combined with other respiratory tests, FeNO helps us build a complete picture of your lung health, so we can personalise your care and help you breathe easier.

Ask your GP for a referral or contact our team directly to book your FeNO test today. If you have questions about the test or your symptoms, our friendly staff are happy to help.
