Breathing, sleep and heart tests, close to home

If your doctor has asked you to have a lung function test, a sleep study or a heart monitor, we can help. Your test is done by a qualified clinical physiologist who will take the time to explain each step, and most tests are bulk billed.

The tests we do

You'll need a referral from your GP or specialist. If you're not sure which test you need, give us a call and we'll talk you through it.

  • Lung function (breathing) tests

For shortness of breath, a cough that won't settle, asthma or COPD. You sit comfortably and breathe into a mouthpiece while we guide you through each breath.

  • Sleep studies at home

For snoring, stopping breathing in your sleep, or waking up tired. We fit a small recorder at a 30-minute appointment, you sleep in your own bed, and you drop it back to us afterwards.

  • Heart and blood pressure monitoring

Holter monitoring and 24-hour blood pressure checks. You wear a small monitor while you go about a normal day at home.

  • Allergy skin testing

A simple skin prick test to check for common allergies such as dust mite and pollens.

What to expect

  1. Get a referral

Ask your GP or specialist for a referral to ERSA. They can send it to us directly, or you can bring it along.

  2. Book a time

Call 1800 475 337 and we'll find a time at the clinic closest to you.

  3. Have your test

A clinical physiologist will explain what's involved before you start, and you're welcome to ask as many questions as you like.

  4. Results go to your doctor

Your results are reviewed by one of our respiratory and sleep physicians and sent to the doctor who referred you. Sleep study results usually take 7 to 10 working days.

What does it cost? Routine lung function tests, eligible sleep studies and heart monitoring are bulk billed, so for most people there is nothing to pay. If you're unsure, just ask when you book.

A note from Shane

Every test at ERSA is done by a qualified clinical physiologist, not a salesperson. That matters to me, because a good test needs someone who knows what they're doing and has the time to explain it.

Plenty of people feel a bit unsure before their first test. That's completely normal. We'll go at your pace, answer your questions, and make sure your results get back to your doctor.
